Xiaomi VR Headset with Google Daydream Compliance Confirmed to Launch in August

At the Google I/O this year, Xiaomi made an unexpected appearance and launched an Android TV OS powered Mi Box. Google followed this up by announcing Xiaomi as their partner alongside seven other hardware manufacturers for their ambitious Google Daydream VR project. Now, it seems that the Chinese Internet company is all set to launch a VR Headset in the market soon.

While the news of an upcoming Xiaomi VR Headset had been floating in the market for quite some time now, the news was confirmed by their GM, Tang Mu only yesterday. The entry of Xiaomi into yet another product category isn’t quite surprising considering the fact that the Lei Jun led brand has been aggressively expanding its range of products since late last year. As of now, Xiaomi has a variety of products under it kitty including powerbanks, fitness trackers, Bluetooth speakers, Smart Shoes, Water Purifiers, rice cookers, QiCycle Electric bike etc.

Tang Mu further added that Xiaomi will launch their VR Headset worldwide sometime in August this year. The executive claims that Xiaomi’s move to entry into the VR industry has been triggered by the rollout of Project Daydream in China and the lack of supported headsets for the same in the country. That aside, none of the VR Headsets available in the market are optimized for MIUI, and thus the brand has taken it upon themselves to provide the best possible VR viewing experience for its existing users. It’s worth noting that the Xiaomi VR Headset will be fully compliant with Google Daydream.

This however isn’t the first time a smartphone brand is building a VR headset customized for their own range of smartphones. Lenovo, Huawei, Coolpad and Samsung has done so in the past, but with Xiaomi, expect prices to be highly competitive. It would possibly be in the leagues of the Cool VR 1X in terms of pricing, however it’s too early to comment.
